Emotional competence is an extremely important aspect of children's development. Children's emotion competence affects their cognitive development, motivation to learn, creativity, health, cooperative, and aggressive behavior. Current studies of children's emotional difficulties and behavior problems have attracted extensive attention from society.
Technologies developed within the life sciences and information science are being utilized with increasing frequency in the area of psychology. Genomic and biochemical analyses, physiological recordings and brain imaging as well as the measurement of behaviors such as facial expressions all may be used to study children's emotional competence. Applying a range of methodological tools will bring greater progress in our understanding of children's emotion competence.
The first "Forum on Development of Child's Emotion Competence" was held in Southeast University in Nanjing, April 2005. More than 70 experts and scholars from the U.S., France, Denmark, and Hong Kong attended this meeting representing related fields such as psychology and biomedical engineering. The main topics of the conference were emotion competence development and its applications in learning science. The conference also presented new methodologies applied in research on children's emotion development, from the genetic level to brain image technology. The meeting achieved great successes in allowing researchers to exchange ideas and information, thus promoting further research on the development of children's emotion competence.
The Second International Forum on Children's Emotional Development and Competence (2nd IFCEDC) will be held in June of 2006 in Southeast University. More than 10 American scientists as well as the same number of Chinese scientists will be invited to give plenary lectures in the forum. We expect that the forum will involve high-level of academic exchanges about state-of-art developments in the field of child's emotion competence. We hope that some collaborative research projects will be initiated between scientists from different countries and backgrounds.
